I’ve gotten 2 calls in the past week or so about this nasty virus spreading across the internet and targeting users again.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation cautions residents not to fall for an email- based scam that locks your computer and claims you owe the FBI $200.00.
The FBI moneypak virus is known to be the most popular cyber scam these days. The virus installs when users click on a compromised website. Once infected, the victim’s computer immediately locks, and the monitor displays a screen stating there has been a violation of federal law. The message further declares the victim’s IP address has been identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as visiting websites that feature child pornography and other illegal content. The reason why it’s so terrifying is that it comes with the name FBI and looks very official.
The message goes on to say in order to unlock their computers, the victim must pay a fine using a prepaid money card service. If demands were not met, criminal charges would be filed and your computer would remain locked on that screen.
What can you d0?
Reset your computer to the factory default. This will wipe out your entire computer including the virus so make sure you have a full BACKUP of your files, pictures and videos. If you are not comfortable with this process, take your computer to a trusted professional to help you.
